May 12th Golf Tournament Benefits the GHS
This year the Garth Homer Foundation tournament organizers were pleased to team up with the Victoria Men’s Wear Golf Association. By merging the two separate tournaments we hoped to create an even better event for everyone. From the feedback received it would seem that goal was achieved!

The intent was to raise enough money to purchase a crew cab truck to be used by the Society’s Community Access Team (CAT) in their successful recycling program. The recyclables that are collected by GHS clients are used to benefit people with disabilities in Lesotho. We were successful and the $14,000 raised has allowed us to purchase the new vehicle!

Credit for the success of this event goes to all our volunteers, the golfers and sponsors. Thanks to all of you for your incredible support. Special thanks goes to Odlum Brown Inc., Metro Lexus Toyota, British Importers, and Totem Travel.

  Self Advocates Attend BCACL Conference
Mary Emmond and Betty Tse along with 8 other advocates from the Victoria Self Advocates group participated in BCACL’s Annual Conference, June 11 -13. The theme, “Tools for Change,” was evident throughout and the sessions attended by either staff or advocates were informative and fun. Everyone was thrilled to learn that next year’s conference is being hosted by Community Living Victoria – this means it will be in our home town and that perhaps more of us can attend!

   GHS Expands Services for Artists
The Society intends to expand services to artists with developmental disabilities. The GHS will expand the highly successful ArtWorks program with a significant renovation to create a large studio and public gallery starting in the fall of 2008.

This will enable the program to expand further and to engage in more community partnerships. Fundraising initiatives are already underway in order to raise the capital required to make the necessary changes. Stay tuned for exciting details.
