Russ hails from St. John’s, Newfoundland where he finished high school, worked for two years as a nursing assistant, and then joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He studied digital technology, solid state theory, and computer programming for three years at the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Halifax. In 1984 Russ was posted to the west coast where he retired in 1992 after a tour in the Persian Gulf (Kuwait). He started working at Garth Homer in 1996, and has one son.
