THE MISSION OF THE GARTH HOMER SOCIETY IS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE, GROWTH AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PEOPLE WHO STRIVE TO OVERCOME DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHYSICAL OBSTACLES.

How do we do it?

Every client who enters the Discovery program has a different way to express their emotions and desires. Without a program like Discovery most clients would become isolated and considerably less involved in their community. By developing individual approaches to engaging the clients and innovative solutions to encourage expression Garth Homer Society staff are able to find ways to help clients participate in society.

This might be achieved through a music therapy program or a recreational activity, volunteer task or engaging socially with everyone around the Garth Homer Centre. For example we have developed the Morning Song which identifies each day of the week and starts everyone’s morning off on a high note by providing an opportunity to interact with other people and become grounded for the day ahead.

AUGMENTED FORMS OF COMMUNICATION
Since improving communication is at the heart of what we do we use a number of methods to achieve that, including boardmaker pictures, sign language, personal pictures and schedules and conversation starters.
