Van sponsorships

Peninsula Coop Van Wrap

Every Tuesday Joanne gets in a van with her friends and support worker and heads out from the Garth Homer Centre to enjoy seeing the city and having a cup of coffee at a coffee shop. A senior with developmental disabilities, Joanne has difficulty getting in and out of vans so she appreciates the specially modified van that is part of the Garth Homer Society fleet. Thanks to Peninsula Co-op Joanne will be enjoying her coffee outings for the next few years.

Peninsula Co-op has signed on to sponsor a van for the Garth Homer Society for the next three years. The sponsorship covers gas costs for the van which is essential for getting clients out to volunteer jobs and recreational activities, a key part of increasing integration in the community. At the same time Peninsula Co-op lets the community know about its support by displaying its logo on a van wrap.

Stanya Watson, Community Relations Manager for Peninsula Co-op says it wasn’t a hard decision to sponsor the van. “Our slogan is moving ahead by giving back and this is the perfect example of that. We like knowing we’re improving the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities in our community."

Re Max Van Wraps

Every Thursday Penny, Kevin and Deanne head out to Mary's Farm & Sanctuary near Goldstream Park to help Mary rescue horses in need. They clean stalls and feed and groom the horses. Penny, Kevin and Deanne all have significant barriers to communication but in the company of the horses their chatter and expressions on their faces speak volumes. This volunteer work has filled them all with confidence and pride in their work.

Now, thanks to RE/MAX the three GHS clients have guaranteed transportation to the Farm. RE/MAX is sponsoring two Garth Homer Society vans for the next 3 years. The sponsorship will cover gas and maintenance costs allowing GHS to redirect the money budgeted for those costs to direct client services.

There are two words that describe all Garth Homer Society endeavours - independence and integration. It would be impossible for us to do activities that help our clients integrate into the community and learn tools for increased independence without transportation. Our fleet of 10 vans is essential to our work but maintaining that fleet is expensive. RE/MAX's support is invaluable and we are all so appreciative.
